The 5-Step Credit Dispute Checklist

Your simple, no-overwhelm roadmap to challenging inaccurate items on your credit report — the same first steps we walk every client through.

1

Pull all three reports

You have three files — and they often don't match.
  • Get your free reports from AnnualCreditReport.com (the only federally authorized source).
  • Download Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — all three.
  • Save or print each so you can mark them up.
2

Review line-by-line & flag errors

Look for anything inaccurate, outdated, or unverifiable.
  • Wrong personal info (name, address, employers).
  • Accounts you don't recognize (possible fraud).
  • Wrong balances, dates, or "late" marks you paid on time.
  • Duplicate accounts or debts past the reporting limit.
💡 Tip: Compare the same account across all three bureaus — an error on one is a strong dispute.
3

Gather your proof

Evidence makes a dispute hard to ignore.
  • Statements, payment confirmations, or letters that show the correct info.
  • For fraud: file an FTC report at IdentityTheft.gov.
  • A copy of your ID and a proof of address.
4

Write & send your dispute

Be clear, factual, and on the record.
  • State the item, why it's wrong, and what you want fixed or removed.
  • Include copies (never originals) of your proof.
  • Send by certified mail with return receipt — keep proof of the date.
✍️ Don't want to start from scratch? Our dispute letter packs are written and ready to send.
5

Track the clock & escalate

The bureaus generally have 30 days to investigate.
  • Mark your calendar 30 days from the date they received it.
  • Review their response — keep everything in a folder.
  • If wrongly "verified," request the Method of Verification or escalate to the CFPB.
